Plagiarism Detection and Prevention

Plagiarism Detection and Prevention

Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else work and using it as your own idea.  These ideas can include books, articles, and web pages.

What plagiarism detection software is available to online instructors?

There is several plagiarism detection software listed that are available to online instructors:

  • Free search engine (ex. Google)
  • Detection software (ex. Essay Verification Engine (EVE))
  • Online Services (ex. Turnitin.com) (Jocoy & DiBiase, 2006)

How can the design of assessments help prevent academic dishonesty?

When designing the assessments to help prevent academic dishonesty, the instructor should consider using an assessment that is mirror in real-life expectations, educate the learners on plagiarism prevention, and design assessments to incorporate collaboration and discourage cheating (Palloff & Pratt, 2012). Educators found out given clear instructions to learners will be the best method for plagiarism prevention (Jocoy & DiBiase, 2006).

What facilitation strategies do you propose to use as a current or future online instructor?

From all of the information that I review in this week learning resources, I would use an assessment that mirrors real-life expectations and the online services Turnitin. These tools will be beneficial to the instructor as well and the learners. As stated by Dr. Palloff and Dr. Pratt, everything that we do and want to learn can be found on the Internet by researching (Palloff & Pratt, 2012). Turnitin is being used by most universities to detect plagiarism. In addition, Turnitin is considered a valuable tool to educate learners to play a role in putting their attention and thoughts into the work of others (Brown, Jordan, Rubin, & Arome, 2010).

What additional considerations for online teaching should be made to help prevent or prevent cheating and plagiarism?

Instructors need to make learners aware of plagiarism and have protocols written so learners can refer back to the information.

  1. I agree that instructors need to take an active role in educating students about plagiarism. I teach in a middle school and you would be surprised how many students do not believe that copying something word for word from the internet is wrong as long as you type it and not paste it into the report. With the increased access to others work we need to make sure we teach students what plagiarism is, how to prevent it and the consequences of it. Do you have an idea of what protocols you would put in place to help prevent plagiarism?
